It's one of the most profound wildlife spectacles on Earth, and understanding what's actually happening makes the experience all the richer.

Which Sea Turtle Species Nest and Where?

  • Green turtle: Costa Rica's Tortuguero, the Great Barrier Reef, and Ascension Island.

  • Olive ridley: Famous for mass synchronized nesting (arribadas) in Mexico and India.

The Nesting Process: Stage by Stage

Stage 1: The Approach

Female turtles return to the beach where they hatched — sometimes travelling thousands of kilometres from feeding grounds. They typically emerge at night, crawling slowly above the high-tide line. If they sense disturbance (lights, people, noise), they may abort the attempt and return to the sea.

Stage 2: Nest Construction

Using her rear flippers, the turtle excavates a flask-shaped chamber in the sand — roughly 40–80cm deep depending on species. This can take 20–45 minutes. She enters a trance-like state during egg-laying itself, making her temporarily less sensitive to gentle observation from a respectful distance.

Stage 3: Egg Laying

A clutch typically contains between 80 and 120 eggs, depending on species. The leathery, ping-pong-ball-sized eggs drop in clusters. The whole laying process takes 10–30 minutes. She then carefully covers the nest with sand, disguising the site before making her way back to the ocean.

Stage 4: Incubation

Eggs incubate for approximately 45–70 days, depending on sand temperature. Importantly, nest temperature influences hatchling sex: warmer nests tend to produce more females. This makes sea turtles particularly vulnerable to climate change as beaches warm.

Stage 5: Hatchling Emergence

Hatchlings typically emerge in groups at night, using the relatively cooler sand surface temperature as a cue. They orient toward the brightest horizon — naturally the ocean — and begin their scramble to the sea. Artificial lights from beachside developments are a significant disorientation hazard.

How to Watch Responsibly

  1. Join a guided tour. Reputable conservation organisations run guided nesting watches with trained naturalists who know how to approach without causing harm.
  2. No white lights on the beach. Use only red-filtered torches if needed, and keep phones face-down.
  3. Stay behind the turtle. Never approach from the front or sides during the approach phase.
  4. Keep voices low and movement minimal. Sudden movements or sounds can cause a nesting female to abandon her attempt.
  5. Never touch or redirect hatchlings. Their scramble to the sea is a critical developmental process — let them find their own way.

Conservation Status and Threats

All seven species of sea turtle are classified as vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered. Key threats include:
